The last of my wolf photos for a while, I promise.

Here’s another Grey Wolf portrait from Woodland Park Zoo. I almost lost all of these photos from my shoot at the zoo. I stopped at a bar on the way home to sit and have a beer and review my shots from the day. But when I went to load in my first card, it was gone from my pocket. I searched franticly for it everywhere. I didn’t find the disk until I decided to leave the bar and give it one last search on the way out. I found it at the entrance behind some table legs. I guess someone or something didn’t want me in that bar at that moment. Guardian angels can be so pushy sometimes!

A Quiet Moment in a Wolf's Life. by Terry Schmidbauer
A Quiet Moment in a Wolf’s Life., a photo by Terry Schmidbauer on Flickr.

A Grey Wolf at Woodland Park Zoo captured with the classic “Beercan” Minolta 70-210mm f4 zoom lens. I was really drawn to the pose of this wolf. It has the feeling of a quiet moment in a wolf’s life and I like that. The forward ears add some alertness to the wolf and make the pose work.
This image also looks great as a B&W because of the incredible dynamic range and good exposure but I like the color too. Although I like this composition, the final printed image may end up being a vertical slice of the left side. But this is how I captured this image so I thought I would throw it up intact and in color and see how I feel about it after living with it for a while.

I shot this at the beginning of last week’s snow storm and totally forgot about it in the all the excitement. I like how this image seems to tell a little story.

This is a view from the transition spot where I converted my skis to a snowboard to ride down this slope. It was a wonderful ride down as I just floated down in a matter of seconds, the reward for hours of climbing up.

Unintentions, Composition 1 by Terry Schmidbauer
Unintentions, Composition 1, a photo by Terry Schmidbauer on Flickr.

This is first is a series of photo composites that I’m calling “Unintentions”. It’s also the first step in a much lengthier process where I’ll be incorporating photographs with encaustics. I will have to wait until spring to work on the encaustics because of ventilation issues but in the meantime I’m building up a series of images that I will be able to draw upon when I start melting wax.

There is simply no better light for a portrait than window light.

Thirteen Legs by Terry Schmidbauer

After I worked out the composition I sat back and thought what was it that I found so special about this image that I would spend the time to processes it. Then it came to me, there are a lot of legs in this image, thirteen to be exact. When I started counting I was really hoping it was going to be thirteen. To my surprise it was.

Maybe this looking a little too much like Sparth. I guess you could say he’s had an influence on me.

This is from a snowshoe hike in Crater Lake National Forest. I wasn’t sure what kind of animal left those tracks but they were a great compositional element.
